National Adoption Day - Guest Blogger

10 years ago when I dreamed of being a mother I could never have imagined how my life would turn out. I could never have imagined the sleep deprivation, fatigue and heartache that comes with being a mom but I also also could have never imagined the joy, love and fun that comes with it. So where am I going with this, you ask?
National Adoption Day is today - a day when we celebrate the blessings of adoption in our lives and our families. No one is more blessed by adoption than our family. First we have my and Bob's childhoods - enhanced by the fosterchildren who came to live with us and blessed by the one who never left - my brother Ed. I never liked Ed when I was a teenager. Anything that took attention from myself and my angst was an unwelcome visitor in my family. But Ed kept coming back despite my petty insults and attempts at making his life miserable. Today I am so grateful for Ed and have such an appreciation for the gift that Ed is in our lives.
And then came kids - all in their own way and at the perfect time. Peter, Molly, Annie, Lizzie and Ellie, each one different, each one perfect, each one ours! We call what we have a "Forever Family" as a way to make it clear to the kids that this is, indeed, FOREVER. There are hard parts that come with adoption - questions that are confusing, statements from others that are hurtful and even some frustrating emotional battles to fight. Most of all adoption is simply one part of what makes our family unique and special.
Molly loves to talk about ANYTHING, but adoption is one of her favorite topics. She decided that instead of blogging she wanted me to do an interview with her like she was a celebrity. So here it is!
Mommy - How old were you when you were adopted?
Molly - (with a giggle) right when I was born, silly!
Mom - DO you know anyone else who was adopted?
Mol - Umm - my older brother, Peter, my younger sister, Ellie, my friend at school - AJ, and Uncle Ed sort of.
Mom - Do you like being adopted?
Mol - Of course, I do!
Mom - What are the best parts of being adopted?
Mol - My forever family because we spend time together and go on trips and there are lots of people to play with - plus they will never bail on me.
Mom - What are the best parts of being in your "forever Family"?
Mol - I'm alive, my Mama's pasta and meatballs and my school and my family.
Mom - Are there any hard parts to being adopted?
Mol - I can't have a cell phone.
Mom - IS that because you are adopted or because you are 7?
Mol - Because I'm 7 but it was worth a try.
Mom - Do you ever have question about adoption?
Mol - Can we go back to the other question about hard parts - Babies screaming is defintely a hard part. What was the next question?
Mom - Questions about adoption?
Mols - Who invented adoption? Why did Mama adopt me and Peter and Ellie?
Mom - Why do you think Mama adopted you?
Mol - Because God knew I was meant to be your (I mean, Mama's) baby and you loved us?
Mom - Absolutely - sometimes God knows better than us what the plan is and if we go with it then things turn out perfectly.
Mol - You also thought I was cute and could be helpful if you had more babies right?
Mom - What would you tell other children who are getting adopted when they are older and might be nervous?
Mol - I would tell them that adoption is fun and you get good meals and people are there for you - like your mom and dad and aunts and uncles and grammy and papa.
Mom- Do you think you might adopt someday?
Mol - Yeah, of course. I want to have lots of babies like my Mama!
Mom - Is there anything else you want to say about adoption?
Mol - Just because kids are the same color as their mom does not mean they are not adopted. I get sort of mad because everyone asks Peter if he is adopted but no one ever asks me - maybe because I look like my Mama. People should not assume things because of how you look right?
The interviewer then wraps the celebrity up in a huge hug and they decide to make some popcorn.
Happy Adoption Day! GNM - ILY!

Technical difficulties caused a long delay in getting you the Halloween pictures but my persistence has finally paid off. I uploaded them to a computer in the hopes of putting them on the blog only to have that computer crash - I was able to retrieve the pictures but not access the USB so no flashdrive - either way - what you see is what you get. I know they are poor quality and kind of small but Auntie Beth absolutely NEEDED to see her babies and I needed to dliver!

Peter giving Ellie a pre-Halloween bottle! Our little cowgirl!Auntie Jen brought all the kids over on Halloween! My godson, TJ, and his little brother Johnnie!KK wearing Annie's flower hat!Uncle B and his goddaughter - the garden gnome.Papa gets snuggles from the girls.Uncle B and his goddaughter on Halloween! We were Auntie Meg's 1st trick or treaters EVER!Lizzie stuffing her face with cholocolate courtesy of her godmother!Ellie is one of the two cutest frogs I have ever seen - this is also the costume that Peter wore on his 1st Halloween.Boom - Boom - Firepower!A moment of happy bliss before the sugar shock set in and tha fighting began. We tried for a picture of the 5 H-W kids but failed pretty miserably! Our little daisy! Annie was supposed ot be a chicken and was so excited until Halloween. We put the costume on her and showed her herself in the mirror and she screamed for us to get it off of her. That was the end of the Chicken costume but thank goodness we had a back-up - the flower that I bought for Lizzie but was told by her godmother that her goddaughter was way too special for an ordinary flower costume. Annie loved it and looked beautiful in it so it all worked out in the end and I'm saving the chicken for next year because I loved it!Cleopatra the Egyptian Queen!Three of our cooperative children posign for MOmmy!Halloween was chaotic and crazy but we got to see some of our favorite people and the kids had a blast! Thanks to Auntie KK for acompanying the H-W clan on our annual outing - BOb was out of commission and I was not about to take this experience on by myself! KK was wonderful and didn't even steal the kids candy like I did!
Also have to give a shout out to Auntie Brigid - don't laugh! Brigid did the girls hair for Meg's wedding - anyone who knows Lizzie has witnessed the AWFUL dreadlocks in the back of her hair thanks to her need to move her head back and forth while going to sleep. I have tried every detangling thing I could find and paid a pretty penny for some of them. Auntie Brigid introduced us on the day of the wedding to Suave Apple Detangler and Lizzie is officially no longer a Bob Marley look alike - she is dreadlock free for the first time since birth! She actually has smooth, silky hair in the back - YEAH!
I have many pictures from this week but I promised Auntie Beth Halloween!

Quick update!

I know this picture below is small but it tells you how much digital cameras have improved since 2002. That being said the picture at the top is Molly girl in her first big girl underpants and it brings back such fond memories of potty training Molly. She was so easy!

Molly girl in her big girl pants!Annie trying out some big girl underpants - how cute is that tiny little body?I'm thinking Annie is not going to be as easy as MOlly at potty training but at least she loves the underpants!Parent observation week at Irish Step Dancing and my Molly Doll was a star as usual!
Now that this is MOlly's 3rd year in Irish step dancing they are really concentrating on heads up, hands at their sides and steps in sync with the class. Molly works hard on it but it still doesn't quite come naturally.
Beautiful girl enjoying her dance! I think this was the Slip Jig or the light jig!Notice Molly's head watching her feet.Checking out her feet again - yikes! Miss Marybeth was not happy with the girls because they all had trouble with this - there were lots of reminders about chins up.And practice makes perfect - Molly with her head up and hands at her sides - yeah!A break with friends before Ballet starts.1st position - what a beauty she is!Embarrassed by Mommy's cheering.Daddy and Annie hanging out reading books!Silly girl! She looks like a little orphan but boy is she cute. The twins are starting to really play together - how cute! Our twins!Lizzie found a seat she liked.
And Mommy snapped a picture before Lizzie went "ass over tea kettle" as my mom would say. It's been a long weekend and I'm tired so I'll end here! GNM - ILY!
